Summer Reading for Students Enrolled in any Honors English Class 2013-2014

2013 Summer Reading

Turn It In Instructions and Deadlines

Writing a Review

All Honors English students are required to purchase (do not share), read, and annotate* the books assigned for their course/grade level (25 points). All honors students will turn in annotated books, copies of wiki journals or peer mark verifications and take a 25- point objective test over summer reading on the first full day of class in August. After a brief class discussion, freshman, sophomore and junior honors students will also complete an essay exam over the reading (50 points).  Summer reading=100 points.

Students who are enrolled in a regular English course first semester and an honors course second semester or those students who have both English courses second semester are responsible for completing the summer reading and meeting with Mrs. Waters during the first seminar period in August to schedule a time to complete the assessment.

*Annotation /discussion assignments vary by grade level.  See specific instructions for your grade level detailed after the chart below.

Annotating a Text (Assignment for students enrolled in Honors English I)

Annotating will enable you to discuss the novel with more support, evidence, and proof.

Ideas of key importance should be underlined/highlighted, which will stand out from the page and allow you to scan quickly for information.  Don't mark everything – if you do, nothing will stand out!

Every time you highlight/underline, make a note in the margin to remind yourself why you think that passage is important.

Types of Passages to Mark/Underline:
ANNOTATE character traits of the following: Edmund Dantes/Monte Cristo, Gaspard Caderousse, Monsieur/Baron Danglars, Fernand Mondego/Count deMorCerf, Monsieur de Villifort

Highlight passages that describe new characters.
When you come across a passage that gives the reader character traits (explain the character’s personality), highlight the passage and make a brief note. In addition to in-book annotations, each reader should make a characters "chart" (on paper) of the main characters. Hint:   some of the characters have multiple personalities (names)
