| Sam Conde, class of '09, opens season for VMI The VMI relays consisted of teams of two, with the top
three such squads from each school being scored by traditional cross
country rules. Each team member would complete one leg, consisting of a
1.5-mile lap around the facility, before handing off to her teammate.
Both participants would then run an additional leg to account for the
final time. The top finishing duo consisted of a pair of VMI
freshmen, Leah Schubel and Jenna Moye. Schubel ran the first leg in
9:12, and handed it off to Moye with a substantial lead. Moye was the
day’s most consistent runner, clocking in at 9:08 and 9:10 on her
respective legs. Another
Keydet freshman was part of the runner-up effort, as Lindsey Carty
teamed with sophomore Jenna Pickett to clock in with a final time of
38:18 in the relay race. Samantha Conde and Hannah Granger rounded out
the VMI scoring with their fifth-place finish, and their final time was
39:29.
“I thought
the women did an outstanding job,” said VMI head coach Paul Spangler.
“We were a little sick going in, as some of our team had the flu, but
we still did a great job. Jenna Moye, Lindsey Carty, Leah Schubel and
Sam Conde all did great as freshmen, while Hannah put up an 8:48 first
leg, which is quite good on this sort of course.”
The women’s cross country team returns to action Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Big South preview meet in High Point, N.C. |
