Senior Pilgrimage to Italy 2020

Day 1: Friday, March 13, 2020 • Depart

Our adventure begins as we depart on our transatlantic flight to Rome, Italy.


Day 2: Saturday, March 14, 2020 • Assisi

Upon arrival in Rome, we meet our local representative as we clear security. We board our coach and get started on our way to Assisi stopping along the way for lunch. Upon arrival in Assisi, we check into our hotel and rest up from our journey. We attend Mass this evening before dinner at our hotel. L, D


Day 3: Sunday, March 15, 2020 • Assisi

After breakfast, our day begins with a local guide joining us as we explore the basilica with its wonderful frescoes by Cimabue and Giotto. We visit the Basilica of St. Clare, Francis’ friend and foundress of the Poor Clare nuns, and see the crucifix that spoke to St. Francis in San Damiano. We also visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli built to enclose the tiny Church of the Porziuncola. The church is St. Francis’ first retreat and place of prayer, where he consecrated Clare as the Bride of Christ. Later we go to San Damiano to pray in the place where Francis wrote the “Canticle of the Sun.” Our day ends with Mass followed by dinner at our hotel. B,


Day 4: Monday, March 16, 2020 • Florence

We depart his morning for Florence, “the Cradle of the Renaissance.” En route we stop at the American Cemetery of Florence. Here we see the graves of thousands of GI’s who fell while fighting their way “up the boot” of Italy. Next we stop for a photographic moment and a beautiful view of Florence on Piazza Michelangelo. After Mass, a local guide joins us for a walking tour and explains the history of this colorful city to us as we walk. We learn of the Duomo with its famed Baptistry, Giotto's Tower, the Pitti Palace, and Ponte Vecchio. We seethe magnificent bronze doors of the Baptistery and explore the treasures inside the Duomo. We overnight in Florence tonight. B


Day 5: Tuesday, March 17, 2020 • Rome

Before leaving Florence this morning, we stop for a visit to the Accademia with Michelangelo's incomparable "David." Then we head south towards Rome, stopping en route in Siena. A locally-guided tour of this fabulous Gothic city acquaints us with its sunken Piazza del Campo and the Duomo, perhaps the finest Gothic cathedral in Italy! We check into our hotel and have dinner. Day 6: Wednesday, March 18, 2020 • Rome

We have a free morning to explore individual interests. After lunch we explore ancient Rome with the Colosseum and a walking tour of the Palatine and Capitoline Hills areas. We walk through the Roman Forum and the ruins of 2000 years ago imagining what it must have been like as we see the tracks the chariot wheels left. We celebrate Mass at a basilica and return back to our hotel. Dinner is on our own tonight. B


Day 7: Thursday, March 19, 2020 • Rome

This morning we tour the Vatican Museum with its magnificent art collection and the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s masterpiece and deeply moving interpretation of Christianity. We tour St. Peter’s Basilica and have quiet time for reflection. The balance of the day is at leisure to explore on our own. B


Day 8: Friday, March 20, 2020 • Rome

This morning we see the catacombs along the Appian Way, the traditional pilgrims’ route followed by Peter and Paul. We visit one of the four major basilicas of Rome, St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, where the Apostle was martyred and is buried. Later this afternoon, we take a gelato class where we learn how this wonderful treat is made. Dinner is on our own. B


Day 9: Saturday, March 21, 2020 • Rome

Today we visit the Pantheon with a guide followed by an orientation tour of Navona Square, Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. We then have free time in the area. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant! B, D


Day 10: Sunday, March 22, 2020 • Return

Our journey draws to a close as we transfer to Leonardo da Vinci airport for our return flight home. We return home moved by the Spirit with enduring memories of early Christianity, historic sites and cities, and a host of new friends.
