Reminder October is Respect Life Month
Our 40-Days-for-Life prayer day is this Sunday Oct 24, from 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM on the NW corner of College and Roe. Join the Saint Thomas Aquinas Community and pray for an end to Abortion. Speaker 10/28 during STA in the Auditorium
Mary Beth Tinker
In 1968 a landmark Supreme Court Case occurred called Tinker v Des Moines. In this court case, the Des Moines School District created a rule which stated that any student who wore an arm band to school in protest of the Vietnam war would be suspended. Mary Beth Tinker and her brother John wore the armbands to school anyway to protest the War. They were suspended. Their parents sued the School District claiming that the rule prohibiting the wearing of armbands was a violation of the first amendment and the students’ freedom of symbolic speech. The case went to the Supreme Court who declared this rule was a violation of the students’ symbolic freedom of speech. Mary Beth Tinker herself is coming (virtually) to talk about her experiences. We will be watching her presentation in the auditorium, and she will have a question and answer session. This speaker session is open to all students and faculty.
