October Virtue of the Month: Prudence

October Virtue of the Month: Prudence

October Virtue of the Month: Prudence

“Prudence is a bold virtue.  It sees the bearing of conduct, not upon our immediate convenience, but upon our ultimate salvation.”
- Frank Sheed, Theology and Sanity

Prudence can be represented by a scroll and torch. Prudence is the right reason in action. Illumined by the light of faith, Christian prudence is able to see clearly even in the midst of darkness to know the truth and the best way to act in any situation.

prudence

Prudence is the cardinal virtue that prefects our intellect, our natural ability to judge correctly. More simply, prudence perfects our common sense. It guides other virtues by setting the standard and measure. When illuminated by faith, Christian prudence enables us to judge situations in light of eternity. In helping us make good decisions, prudence applies moral principles to specific cases. Its decisions are clear, so that we are able to overcome doubts abu the good we desire to achieve and the evil we wish to avoid. In practicing prudence, the Christian is able to do “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious.” (Philippians 4:8)

Parts of a Prudential Act Opposing Trait
GOOD COUNSEL Seeking advice from reasonable and trustworthy persons. Seeking advice from those who agree with you or do not share your moral values.
GOOD JUDGMENT Thinking rightly about a decision, carefully considering all the circumstances, and praying about what the Lord would have you do. Acting without thinking.
GOOD COMMAND Acting upon a sound decision made after thoughtful deliberation. Failing to act upon a sound decision.

Pray an Act of Prudence
Dear Jesus, In my thoughts, words, and actions I can give You praise. Always grant me the grace to know the truth, to always speak what is right, and to follow You in all I do.
