School Supply Drive

Five smiling girls stand in front of a brick wall adorned with colorful artwork and boxes of supplies.

Every August the National Honor Society coordinates a School Supply Drive benefitting the teachers and students at Resurrection Catholic Grade School in Kansas City, Kansas.

At Saint Thomas Aquinas, the first week of school carries a special tradition - one rooted in generosity and community. For over 20 years, our National Honor Society has led the Back-to-School Supply Drive, inviting students to bring not only their own supplies, but also to share with others.

Together, they’ve brightened the start of the school year for the students and teachers of Resurrection Catholic Grade School in Kansas City, Kansas, ensuring they have the tools to learn, grow, and thrive.

School Supply Drive August

The drive is adjusted annually based on Resurrection’s needs. Each class at Aquinas has five specific goals to reach. This is a Class Competition for Class of the Year points. Reaching the goal first will earn four points, and not reaching the goal for all five categories will result in zero points. Classes need to communicate to reach their goal! The Student Council has a Give Butter account set up to gather funds, and GroupMe chats for communicating.

The teachers at Resurrection Catholic School who do such great work also need our financial support with supplies. While our Saints are sending boxes of bulk supplies for the students, their teachers are in need of specialized supplies. The teachers serve kids with so many needs, we hope to give them the little things they need to keep their students energized and positive about school. Our staff and faculty step in to ensure the teachers lists are fulfilled.

School Supply Drive was a HUGE success!
School Supply Drive was a HUGE success!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Saint Thomas Aquinas community, we collected and donated 20,856 school supply items and $1,500 in gift cards to help support the students, faculty, and staff at Resurrection Catholic School.

The Freshman Class made history by earning the first Class Competition event of the year, and they did it in an incredible three days!

Not only did the Freshman reach their goal, but every class exceeded its goal, making this School Supply Drive an exciting success for the entire school.

This is what it truly means to be a Saint: coming together, giving back, and making a difference in our community. Thank you to everyone who donated, collected, organized, and supported this drive. Your generosity will make a difference for the students and teachers of Resurrection Catholic Grade School.

Make a Student Smile

History of the NHS School Supply Drive

For 22 years, Saint Thomas Aquinas students have collected school supplies for a ‘sister’ grade school in the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas.

It started in 2003 with collecting supplies for students at All Saints School in Kansas City, Kansas.

In 2007, All Saints, Cathedral of St. Peter, and Holy Family grade schools consolidated, and Resurrection was formed to unite and "resurrect" them under one roof.

Since then, each year, Resurrection's teachers send Saint Thomas Aquinas a list of which supplies their students need most. NHS divides the supplies among classes and distributes the lists.

Eventually, NHS and Student Council joined forces to make the school supply drive the first major class competition event of the year. Classes are given their supply goals they need to reach in order to earn a class competition point. The class that reaches their goals first, earns an extra class competition point. During the first full week of classes, NHS students gather, tally, pack and deliver the supplies to Resurrection school.
